Does Metformin induce telogen effluvium (hair loss) in some people?
Tuesday, April 14th, 2009My endocrinologist put me on Metformin (extended release) for the treatment of insulin resistance. 500mg daily 1st week, 1000mg daily 2nd week, 1500mg 3rd week.
EXACTLY 2 weeks after starting it, I noticed my hair seemed to be falling out at a more rapid pace than usual. I counted the hairs and I get anywhere from 150-250 in a single day. They are full hairs, often with a root attached. I don’t count breakage.
My doc pulled me off the med for an unrelated reason, but the hair loss continues. I’ve been off the medication for about 2 weeks now. I had no issue with hair loss prior to this, so I’m not really buying the logic that it’s merely a coincidence.
I’m a little freaked out by all this. Why is this happening? What can I do?
(Note: I am 25, very active, and eat a healthy diet. I don’t think there are any nutritional deficits either.)
CRAIG
